international forest fund
The article consists of several suggestions to help protect the world's forests by development of an international forest protection fund. The lecturer believes this theory is flawed and it will not reduce deforestation rates. His further demonstrations are as follows.
Firstly, despite what the reading passage claims, agriculture itself is a threat to forest ecosystems. As the population grows in agricultural areas, the farmers are forced to enhance their harvest yields by using modern technologies. This involves actions which can endanger forests such as pesticide use. Subsequently, promoting agriculture might be even more dangerous for forests than logging.
Secondly, dispersing funds to forest owners cannot be beneficial either because the forest owners are in fact governments rather than forest dwellers themselves. Moreover, There is no guarantee that the funds delieverd to the governments will be used in the path of forest protection.
Finally, in the case of acquiring an international fund to enhance biodiversity in forests, it is more likely that people and governments use that fund to grow more commercial plants rather than the species which contribute to the biodiversity of the ecosystem.
Collectively, none of the suggestions provided in the reading passage seem beneficial to conserve the forests using an international fund system.
