Both the reading and the listening discuss the subject of the portrait that one of the Austen family owned and offered it for sale lately. The author believes that Jane Austen is the subject of that portrait and provides three reasons for support. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that none of these reasons are convincing.
To begin with, the author suggests that Austen's family, in 1882, authorized the use of the portrait as a demonstration and they acknowledged that the teenage girl in painting is Jane Austen. The lecturer challenges this specific argument by asserting that this evidence is questionable since the authorization occurred after Austen's death by 70 years. In addition, he mentions that the family member who asserted that she was Austen, had never seen Austin herself. Therefore, they can not tell that the girl Austin and the evidence is hardly supported.
Secondly, the writer argues that the face of the girl looks like the face in the sketch made by Austen's sister Cassandra. The lecturer, however, refutes this point by mentioning that Austins's family was very large and extended that have many teenage girls. The experts claim that Marian Campil, Austin's distant niece, could be the true subject of the portrait.
Finally, the author posits that Humphery was the painter of the portrait and he did it at the time when Austen was teenager and also he worked professionally in the late 1780s and the beginning of 1790s. In contrast, the lecturer cast doubt on this by stating that the records have shown that Humphery started his work when he was 27 years old. Thus, at that time Austin was older than the girl in the portrait.
