Many countries require cigarette smokers to pay particularly high taxes on their purchases of cigarettes; similar taxes are being considered for unhealthy foods. The policy of imposing high taxes on cigarettes and other unhealthy products has a number of

This article suggests that tax on cigars and unhealthy food is beneficial for society and provides three reasons for support. However, the professor believes that each of the reasons can be challenged. Then, she denies each of the author's points.

First, the reading claims that it would discourage people from continuing this behavior, so the society is going to be healthier. The professor refutes this point by saying that in this approach, people have to buy products with lower qualities which are even more harmful to their health and bring more significant risks.

Secondly, the article posits that it is fair to invest extra money taken from people on their health services to cover their medical expenses. However, the professor says that although it might seem fair at first, it is in fact, unfair. This is because it is a more significant burden for people with low incomes, while it does not affect people with high salaries.

Third, the reading states that the tax can be used on different things like governmental projects that are beneficial for the public. The professor opposes this point by explaining the downside of this approach. She states that It causes the government to rely on this money so that it stops its influential activities toward limiting such behavior. For example, the law that restricts people from smoking in public might be eliminated to increase the government's profit.
