This material addresses the question of survival of dinosaurs in the north of Alaska during its cold and dark winters. The reading passage suggests that dinosaurs migrated south to stay alive. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes this information by stating that those animals stayed in the northern region of Alaska even in wintertime.
To begin with, the reading passage highlights that the edmontosaurs were eating only plants, which proves the migration hypothesis since the North of Alaska lacked vegetation during cold period of year. Meanwhile, the professor casts doubt on this and argues that during the dinosaurs' era summerdays were warm and the sunshine was long enough for plants to grow and even feed the soil with nutrients; animals fed on those nutrients during winter.
Additionally, the article posits that the fact the dinosaurs were used to live in herds is another prove of the migration theory as it is easier to migrate collectively; moreover, the behaviorial pattern of modern animals supports that idea as well. However, the professor advocates a different approach and provides the following details. Namely, she mentions that the mere fact of living in herds is not enough to claim that dinosaurs were migrating. Living in herds is justified by other reasons, for example, by the need of extra protection from the predators.
Finally, the author invites attention to the fact that edmomosaurs were able to migrate taking into account the moving power of those animals, which was high. This goes counter to the information in the listenign passage, according to which, juvenile dinosaurs were apparently unable to cover long distances southward. Consequently, the herd would have stayed with the young in the northern part of Alaska for they would not survive alone.
