memoir of Chevalier de Seingalt
The reading and the lecture are both about the accuracy and reliability of the memoir of Chevalier de Seingalt. Whereas the author of the reading states that Chevalier made up some events and altered some to make his memoir more exited, the lecturer suggest that Chevalier the memoir is indeed accurate and reliable. The lecturer cast doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First of all, according to the article, the memoir said when he was living in Switzerland, he was rich, but records shows that he borrowed money from a merchant. However, the lecturer disputes this point. She says that he was wealthy and have a lot of assets. Furthermore, she mentions that he was borrowed money because it takes time to convert his assets to money.
Secondly, the reading states that critics are worried about the accuracy of conversations in the memoir, because these meetings happened years before he wrote the memoir. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. She argues that at the end of each conversation he writes notes and keep record of it. In addition, she points out there are reference who confirm that and he discusses with them these notes.
Finally, the passage claims that when he was a prisoner in Italy, he bribed the jailer to get free, unlike what he wrote which is making a hole in the ceiling to escape. On the other hand, the lecturer says that there are record in old Venetian government shows that when Chevalier escape the had to repair the ceiling which indicate the accuracy of the memoir.
