Mission on Mars

Essay topics:

Mission on Mars

The reading and the lecture are both about the mission to Mars. The author of the reading feels that the project of sending humans to Mars will require solving a lot of problems. The lecturer challenged the claims made by the author. She is of opinion that there are challenges to these problems.
First, the author argues that a round trip from and to Mars will require two years which is a long time trip. The article mentions that the water and the food supplies will no be fit in the spaceship. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that in spaceship they can use hydroponics which is plants in water instead of being in soil. Additionally, she says that plants in water have some advantages like plants take carbon dioxide and give oxygen, recycle wastewater and clean it to become good to drink, and plants in the water will be less in size.
Secondly, the writer suggests that while mission to Mars the astronauts will be in a zero-gravity environment for many months. In the article, it is said that being in zero gravity for a long time has side effects like decreased muscle tone, and lower bone density. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that we can use techniques to prevent the effect of zero gravity. She elaborates this by bringing up the point that astronauts can do exercise to reduce the effect on muscle mass, and use vitamins and minerals like calcium to reduce the effect on bone density.
Finally, the author posits that astronauts on a mission to Mars will be exposed to harmful solar radiation. Moreover, the article stated that using a shield to protect the spaceship at this time is impossible because that will add a lot of weight to the spaceship so the astronauts will be at risk of solar radiation. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that solar radiation is not very dangerous. She notes that only occasionally the astronauts will be exposed to radiation and while that they can use a shield that does not add weight, and can use the instrument to monitor when radiation starts to hit the spaceship.
In conclusion, the lecturer's opinion is opposing the author's opinion
