Nuclear power plant or not

Essay topics:

Nuclear power plant or not

The article and the lecture talk about the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear power plants. The writer of the article feels that nuclear power stations should not exist anymore whereas, the lecturer believes that nuclear power stations can be an ideal source of energy for the future.
The writer states that nuclear power plants have detrimental effects on the environment, he uses the infamous Chernobyl incident to illustrate the threats nuclear power plants pose to the environment. The lecturer, however, asserts that pollution caused by nuclear power plants is insignificant compared to the pollution caused by burning of fossil fuels, use of natural gas or even from solar or wind power generation. Additionally, he mentions that pollution owing to use of fossil fuel has resulted in significantly more deaths than the nuclear power plants did in Chernobyl.
The writer claims states that nuclear fuel is inefficient since only 10% of nuclear fuel can be used while remaining 90% turn into poisonous, useless waste. On the other hand, the lecturer challenges this claim and he mentions that generation of large amount of waste is a temporary problem since numerous promising studies have shown that the waste can be recycled. Furthermore, as financial incentive is involved the lecturer is hopeful that this problem of waste will soon be resolved
Lastly, according to the article, solar and wind power will be ideal sources of energy. However, the lecturer points out that both of these sources of power are weather dependent. When weather will be cloudy or if there is no wind present, it will hard to generate power, whereas nuclear power plants can be a reliable source of constant power.
Determining whether nuclear power plants can be a feasible source of energy for the future or not can be difficult since both advantages and disadvantages are associated with it and people on both sides will find it hard to find a common ground.
