The reading passage discusses about nutrias which are rat like animals growing in damp and semi-aquatic areas. The passage is mainly concerned about controlling measures of nutrias. Several methods are suggested in the passage. However, the lectures tries to reprimand those control measures are they are deemed inappropriate.
The very first control strategy is use of modern fences and walls made of hard materials. Wooden fences cannot be selected because nutrias are very efficient in cutting with their teeth. On the contrary, the lecturer posits this is not a good idea. As nutrias are efficient diggers, using fences would not be good solution. Nutria passes the barred fences by digging through tunnel under the fences. Hence, the idea is not factual.
The reading passage also states drying up of drainage as next method for controlling. According to the passage, nutrias dwell around drainage and use these drainage channel to move. But, the lecturer counters the solution by stating, draining of water from irrigation channels might cause negative effect to plant growth. Draining of channels during peak water requiring stages might hamper growth of vegetables and crops. Although, controlling of nutria might be effective, it adversely affects crop which is not a better trade.
Finally, the passage suggest decreasing the population of nutrias by consuming them as food can be effective. Nutrias are good source of protein and have very less amount of fats and cholesterol. Its meat contains higher protein in comparison to beef. In contrasts, the lecturer states nutria are not good for consuming. It is host for many bacteria and parasites. Consuming its meat may result in Tuberculosis and septicemia. The parasites inside it might cause rash, fever and eventually drastic health loss. Therefore, consuming these might turn out to be quite expensive.
Thus, the reading passage is trying to provide solutions to control nutria. However, the lecturer provides insight in negative sites of these control measures. The lecturer states all the solutions in reading passage are inappropriate.
