Essay topics:

One of the threats to endangered sea turtle species is the use of nets by commercial shrimp-fishing boats. When turtles get accidentally caught in the nets, they cannot rise to the surface of the ocean to breathe, and they die.

The article states that nets that commercial shrimp use for fishing boats causes sea turtles to get stuck in the nets and they can not get back to the surface of the ocean to breathe and they die. The one way to protect the turtle from dying is using a turtle excluder device (TED) and it helps turtles escape, passage mentions that point using TEDs is not a good idea for several reasons. However, the professor refutes each of the author's ideas.
First, the reading claims that just once a month one turtle is stuck in nets and it is not too much. Moreover, using TEDs is costly for shrimpers and the possibility of losing shrimp is too high in comparison with the small chance of saving one turtle. The professor refutes this point by saying that shrimpers kill thousands of turtles each year and because of that turtles' population decreases every year.
Second, the article posits that protecting sea turtles is might be more impressible than using TEDs. One way is they can use is having a time limitation for shrimp boats when their nets are underwater, after the time limit is reached, the nets should be pulled out and shrimpers release the turtles from the nets. The professor says that the time limitation idea is good in theory but in the reality, they can not control thousands of boats' time.
Finally, the passage claims that TEDs are still small for the huge type of turtles. However, the professor opposes this point by explaining that in the areas where they are large species of turtle live there it is not hard to create larger TEDs.
