The main idea of both the passage and the lecture is about how many workdays a week is beneficial for the economy as a whole, employers, and employees. Considering this, the author claims that a four-day week with 80 percent of standard pay is much better than five-day regular payment for different reasons. The professor, on the other hand, categorically denies whatever mentioned by citing the following reasons.
First of all, both the author and the lecturer talk about companies’ profits. According to the passage, companies can hire more employees to increase their productivity without any additional expenditure, and by adding new workers, the rate of unemployment will decrease. The professor, nevertheless, rejects the author’s view and illustrates the idea that hiring more people will be very expensive because the employers should spend more on training and medication cares. Also, they will need more office space. These will add up to overall costs.
Second, both the passage and the talk discuss the issue of costly errors made by employees. The reading goes on to mention that since people work fewer days, they will rest better and make fewer errors in their work. Nonetheless, the professor supports a contradictory view as compared to that presented in the reading. He describes that, because hiring new employees is more expensive, the companies put more pressure on workers by making them work overtime or expect them to do the five-day job in four days. By doing so, the work becomes unpleasant.
Finally, the passage and the lecture both discuss employees’ interests. The author of the reading states that if workers have three days off, they will have more time to improve their quality of life; however, the speaker refutes it, saying that working just four days a week will decrease the job stability. Also, he says that the employees who work five days a week are more likely to get promotions in their jobs.
All in all, the author maintains that four-day jobs are far better than five-days. While the professor not only completely casts doubt on it, but he also demonstrates that five-day jobs are more beneficial for individuals, companies, and the economy as a whole.
