P. ramorum
The lecture and reading are both about P. ramorum. The author of reading feels that there are several methods of protecting the forest against the P. ramorum have been proposed. The lecturer challenges the claims made by author. He is of opinion that these methods have serious limitation, not practical and ineffective.
First, the author of reading argues that human helps with spread of spores of P. ramorum by hiking and biking trails. The article mentions that these spores help fungi to reproduce and we can prevent human from spreading those spores by wash their shoes and installing new bikes scrubbers on bicycle trails and that will be low cost to prevent the P.ramorum from spread. this specific argument is challenged by lecturer. He claims that precaution has little manage for spreading P.ramorum. Additionally, he says that not only human participating in that spred, but also the rain water that washes and carry these spores along distances.
Secondly, the writer suggests that we can use fungicidal (fungi-killing) chemical. In the article, it is said that these chemicals stimulate the oak trees' natural defenses against the P. ramorum and reduce the likelihood that the oaks will be infected. The lecturer, however rebuts this by mentioning that these chemical injections are effective for few months and then they need to be reinject again. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that to imagine a forest and thousands of trees in there and need to be reingect every few months that will take a lot of effort and cost a lot of money.
Finally, the author posits that we can fight the P. ramorum by practicing the clear-cutting. Moreover, the article stated that cutting or burning will involve the seemingly the healthy vegetation that surround the oaks and that because even there is no sign of infection on some trees they are infected. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that it is not making sence to cut the healthy vegetation, because some are rare like in west of united states. He notes that if we cut the rare vegetation it will be difficult to grow back easily and that will hurt the ecosystem.
