Essay topics:

painting of young woman in a long dress which is not signed by Whistler

The reading and the lecture are both about the painting of young woman in a long dress which is not signed by Whistler. Whereas the author of the reading states that this painting painted by the Whistler, the lecturer suggests that painting not painted by he. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.

First of all, according to the reading, this painting was included in an exhibition which organized by Whistler's close friend and he considered this painting to be Whistler's work. However, the lecturer disputes this point. He says that Whistler's close friend exhibition included varies painters paints not only Whistler's paints. Furthermore, he mentions that this exhibition was collection of Whistler's close friend.

Secondly, the reading states that the woman in the painting obviously resembles to woman in ''Symphony in White'' painting which painted by Whistler and this painting uses the monochromatic palate that Whistler used in his most famous painting. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. He argues that woman in both paintings was popular at that times. In addition, he points out monochromatic palate was famous at that times.

Finally, the reading claims that small butterfly drawing in the lower right corner is the most significiant symbol used by Whistler in his paintings instead of signature. On the other hand, the lecturer believe that Whistler usually draw this symbol in upper left corner. He thinks that the shape and color of the butterfly is diferent from his other paintings. Moreover, he feels that this small butterfly drew in painting later for forgery.
