peat bog

Essay topics:

peat bog

The reading passage argues that the Monte Verde Chile site was not the first human settlement in the america 12,500 years ago. However, the speaker in the lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He asserts that the area was actually inhabited by the first hunter-gatherer on the continent.

First of all, the author assumes that no hunting tools or weapons have been found in this wetland and this means early humans did not live in this site. Nonetheless. the lecture challenges this assumption. he indicates that people used primitive weapons, such as stones and bones, for hunting and hence, it's expected not to find advanced tools like spears. In addition, the professor further elaborates that a bone with meat on it has been discovered in the region, which confirms that the dwellers consumed meat through killing animals.

Secondly, the writer contends that the disturbance of the soil by farming, which almost destroyed the site, made it difficult to trust the results from the dating process. Nevertheless, the lecturer brings up the fact that agriculture only affected the upper layers and most artifacts have been unearthed in the deeper layers, which were well-preserved. Besides, the main site is in the peat bog, which was never touched.

Lastly, the excerpt holds that the use of bitumen compromised the land and influenced the entire dating process. In contrast, the listening posits that the artifacts have been immersed in chemicals to preserve it for dating. Also, scientists conducted over twenty five tests and the majority of them confirmed the accuracy of thea dating results
