Private collectors have been selling and buying fossils, the petrified remains of ancient organisms, ever since the eighteenth century. In recent years, however, the sale of fossils, particularly of dinosaurs and other large vertebrates, has grown into a

The lecture and the reading are both about the merits and demerits of fossil trade. The author of the reading believes that it is disastrous for both scientists and the general public. The professor casts doubt on claims made by the author. She thinks the advantages of it can outweigh the disadvantages.
First of all, the author argues that the public may suffer, as long as the remains are destined to go to collectors, who do not want to release their collections. The article mentions that as it is difficult to see fossils, the interest of people in them can decrease. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that there is greater exposure on people because more and more remains are available for purchase. As a result, even poor schools can afford to buy and make public them.
Secondly, the writer suggests that scientists may lose access to experimentations on fossils. In the passage, it is said that very important discoveries will miss out. The speaker, however, rebuts this by mentioning that all private collectors hire scientists. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that there is a need for them to indicate whether is discovery valuable or not.
Finally, the author posits that private fossil traders are vitiating fundamental evidence related to the remains, which can be carried out by scientists. According to the reading, the vast majority of commercials are untrained and uninterested in conducting research on them. On the contrary, the teacher's position is defending the assumption that it is better to be found many fossils, rather than leave undiscovered. She points out that the collectors have been unearthing a lot of findings, which are still not determined by collecting operation of universities and museums.
