Professors are normally found in university classrooms, offices, and libraries doing research and lecturing to their students. More and more, however, they also appear as guests on television news programs, giving expert commentary on the latest events in

Both the text and the speaker talk about professors taking part on television news programs as guests. The author mentions that this is helpful for professors themselves and the public viewers in general. The women, however, casts doubt on this claim made by the passage. She thinks that it is doubtful whether anyone benefits from such events including professors themselves.

First of all, the text mentions that professors commenting on television shows is beneficial for them in enhancing their reputation as scholars and ultimately leading to good reputation of the university. The speaker refutes this by saying that such professors are considered as not serious by fellow scholars and they may be barred from admission into important conferences and education meetings within university and may get rid of the money they get for the research work. She goes on to mention that the preparing for the news program will take a lot of their time as they need to research on what they are going to present in the program. A lot of time that is wasted in research, presentation and getting dressed up and ready for the program could be utilized for research related to university work and imparting education to the students.

Secondly, the passage states that this will benefit the general public as the viewers have chance to listen to the ideas of the experts on the subject matter directly. The speaker refutes this by mentioning that the television news programs are not interested in the in-depth discussion and presentation of the content. In spite of having academic title, the presentation might be lacking in the actual intellectual content. Such matter, in spite of coming out from an expert would not be much different from the content of a report who has done some research on the topic.

In conclusion, the speaker effectively challenges the claims made in the passage by explaining how professors commenting on television programs as subject matter experts cannot be beneficial to anybody.
