Question : Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they case doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.

In the reading passage, the author feels that are three possible explanations to support that Robert E. Peary reached the North Pole in 1909. However, finding all these ideas implausible and questionable, the lecture casts doubt on what is presented and states some evidence to the contrary.

To begin with, the writer suggests that the investigation made by the National Geographic Society concluded that Peary’s accounts were consistent and declared that he had indeed reached the North Pole. This specific argument is challenged by the lecture. She argues that this investigation was not complete objective due to the fact that this Society was composed by Peary’s friends. Moreover, she posits that in only two days the facts could not be examined.

Secondly, the author claims that Tom Avery made the same trek of Peary in less than 37 days. In contrast, the lecture rebuts this idea by saying that the Avery carried much less weight than Peary. Also, she mentions that the weather Avery's trek was better than the Peary. As a result, she thinks that this explanation is faulty.

Finally, the reading believes that a photo of Peary support the idea that he reached the North Pole in order to the correct Sun's position on the day. But, the lecture rejects this argument. She is of the opinion that a primitive camera could not provide evidence that the position of the Sun in Peary's photo is accurate. Hence, she points out that this idea can not be true.
