Question: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage.
The land that once used to grow vegetation is now turning into desert because of the climate change and needs to be protected. according to the passage, scientists have suggested the using of box-shape device that collects water will help the trees to grow but it will not be successful against this desertification. The speaker however, stated that the reasons mentioned against the plant box device are not convincing.
First, according to the passage the cost of device cannot afford to buy millions of trees. The speaker on the contrary explained that, the device is useful in a way that once a tree grown and get bigger it can be uprooted from the device and another tree can be planted. moreover, if we divide the cost of a device over the number of trees can be grown in it will become reasonable as, device can be reusable.
In addition, passage mentioned that in harsh condition people can not able to feed themselves so it is difficult to motivate these people to use the device. however, speaker stated that there are many possible rewards for people as device not only collect for a tree but also for other plants. this helps the people to grow other vegetables for them which means they could have more food. Further more, once the tree in the device outgrown its branches can be used for burning fire. Therefore, using the device for such people means they have more food and fire.
Finally, passage stated that the device ability is limited for small tree and may not be able to survive in harsh environment. The lecturer on the other hand stated that, a tree can survive in very harsh condition because once the tree grown bigger it has profound roots system that reaches deep into the moist soil. moreover, she claimed that in Sahara desert 90% of the trees have been thriving after the devices were removed. As a result, the trees will survive on the basis of deep underground root system .
