R robustus

Essay topics

The passage and the lecturer talks about a pre-historic mammal "R. robustus", whose fossil was recently discovered by archaeologists. The remains of a psittacosaur dinosaur was found in the mammal's stomach which led to a discussion on whether the R.robustus was an active hunter or not.

Firstly, the lecturer explains that the size of the mammal was almost twice the size of dinosaur remains found in the stomach. This information can be used to infer that even though the R.Robustus was small in size, it was large enough to hunt baby psittacosaurs or dinosaurs of similar size. While doing so, the lecturer contradicts the opinion expressed by the author of the passage which highlights this difference in size of the R.Robustus and a full-grown psittacosaur and concludes that R.robustus would possibly not have been able to hunt the dinosaur.

Secondly, the lecturer cites the example of the Tasmanian devil, a small mammal with short legs positioned slightly towards the side of the body. She explains how this animal is an active and a very successful hunter that can reach speeds upto 15 km/h. Therefore, R.robustus, a mammal with similar features could very well be an active hunter as well, an opinion which is contradicted in the passage.

Finally, while explaining the method in which R.robustus consumed its food, the lecturer points out that the back teeth of this mammal were not used for chewing and it most likely swallowed its food whole. This, according to the lecturer's opinion, is the reason why the bones found in the stomach did not have any bite marks. On the other hand, the author of the passage feels that R.robustus, swallowed an egg of the dinosaur with a baby dinosaur inside the shell and therefore, the bite marks were not seen on the bones.
