Essay topics:

The reading and the lecture are both about the functions of some prehistoric paintings attributed to caves in southwestern France. The author of the reading believes that based on the evidence, these paintings were made to ensure a successful hunt. The claims made by the author are challenged by the lecturer. He is of the opinion that none of the explanations made by the author are valid.

First of all, the author suggests that most subjects in the cave paintings are large mammals hunted by the paleolithic people, so probably, these paintings were made for hunting purposes. The lecturer refutes this specific argument. He states that there are animals painted in the cave such as cats and rhinoceros, and people would not hunt such animals.

Secondly, the author posits that human figures in the cave paintings had animals' heads. it is said in the reading that hunters would probably use these heads to disguise themselves. The lecturer, however, believes that there were human figures having animals head with them, but they were not in the hunting positions. He elaborates on this by mentioning that figures were typically horizontal, as if they were sleeping and not busy hunting.

Finally, the author proposes that some cultures used to think that painting an event would help it to happen in reality. The lecturer, on the other hand, argues that the paintings could also have other cultural functions. For example, some people thought their ansistors' spirits lived in some animals' bodies, so they would utilize these paintings in some ceremonial activities.
