Reading Passage Although Johannes Vermeer is famous for his masterpiece quot Girl with a Pearl Earring quot not much is known about who modeled for the painting The curiosity aroused by the mystery brought about several theories about the true i

Both the reading passage and lecturer talks about model portraied in one of Vermeer's masterpiece. The passage presents various theories arised to indentify the model. However, the lecturer refutes these theories by providing necessary grounds.
First, the passage speculates that the model could be Vermeer's own daughter. Since, Vermeer used to get motivated from daily life chores there might be high chance that he painted a familiar person to him; his daughter. A critic also claimed that such an extra-ordinary portray of a daughter can be made only by a father. But, the lecturer doesnot agree with it. According to him, having close intice with daily life activities doesnot necessarily prove he portrayed his daughter. Vermeer has painted about 40 paintings of women and all of them have different faces. These women could be anyone. Hence, it doesnot necessarily provide evidience to prove it was his daughter.
In addition to this, the passage claims that the model could be daughter of his contemporary compatriot. Maybe his companion might have requested him to portray his daughter. Also, this theory might be true because the painting was gifted to his friend in his wedding night. However, the lecturer is totally agains it. The society during those time were conservative one. So, nobody would ask a painter to paint their daughter in such unconventional clothings as of the model in tha painting. Instead, the lecturer thinks the portray may be of some higher class figure.
Finally, the passage links the model with tronie theory which was famous at the time of paintaing. The model in the painting might be an imaginary figure. With more focus on face of the model by adjusting light and darkness, the portray conveys a principle of Tronie paintings. On the contrary the lecturer feels the theory doesnot match. According to lecturer, the other paintings made by Vermeer were not imaginary but just virtual representation. Scenery represented in the paintings cannot be labeled imaginary. Hence, the lecturer is against the claims of the passage.
