rembrandt

rembrandt

Both the article and the lecture discuss the doubts whether a specific painting was painted by Rembrandt the famous Dutch painter. The painting mentioned is called “a portrait of an elderly woman in a white bonnet”. While the article claims that it wasn’t Rembrandt who painted this painting, the lecture however refutes this by providing many reasons that will be further elaborated in the following passage.
Firstly, the article mentioned there is no match between the linen cap that looked so cheap and the luxurious fur collar. This mismatch doesn’t coincide with the painter’s style who was known for his precision when it concerns the details. Meanwhile, the lecture challenges this by mentioning that the x-ray analysis made on the painting proved that the collar fur was added to the paintings hundred years later after the original portrait was painted to add value and increase the price of the painting when it looks like a portrait of an aristocratic lady rather than a normal woman.
Secondly, the article states that the error of shadow and light on the face of the woman makes it look unauthentic. Since Rembrandt is the master of light and shadow, there is no way he would do such a mistake. Clearly, the lecture debates this and mentioned that when the fur collar was added it created this mismatch between the shadow and light. She further interpreted that when the fur collar was removed, it was just a simple white collar. The revealed white collar would create the face illumination rather than shadowing.
Lastly, the article provided the fact that none of the other Rembrandt paintings used a panel of small pieces of wood glued together like the one used in this particular painting. The lecture opposes this by ensuring that the wood used in the painting is from the same tree that was used for the wood panel of all his other paintings. Moreover, the lecture stated that this panel was added to the main painting to increase its value just like what happened with the fur collar.
In conclusion, the claim that the painting wasn’t painted by Rembrandt is not well-founded
