Rembrandt is the most famous of the seventeenth century Dutch painters However there are doubts whether some paintings attributed to Rembrandt were actually painted by him One such painting is known as attributed to Rembrandt because of its style and inde

The author in the reading states that the painting named "Portrait of an Elderly in a White Bonnet" attributed to Rembrandt is inaccurate. He suggests that it is not a work done by Rembrandt. The professor in the lecture disagrees. She says, although, points made in reading are true, new research shows that, indeed, the painting is made by Rembrandt.

First, the author asserts that the way in which the woman in the portrait is dressed inconsistently which doesn't match the accuracy for which Rembrandt was known. The lecturer, while accepting the argument, claims that the further research on the painting by X-Ray and analysis of color pigment shows that the painting was modified 100 years later to make it more appealing, to make it look more formal.

Second, the author says that Rembrandt never used to make mistakes of lighting and shadows in his painting. The painting discussed here has some issues related to this. The lecturer refutes this argument by saying that if the modification done on the painting is removed then the sense of light and shadow matches perfectly.
Originally, she was wearing a simple light colored fur collar, which would allow the light to pass and makes it look illuminated.

Finally, the author states that the painting has several different pieces of wood glued together but Rembrandt often painted on single wood panel. Once again, the lecturer disagrees. She goes on to say to in order to make the painting look more valuable and grander these additional pieces were glued to its top, bottom and sides later on during modification. Moreover, the wooden piece on which painting is from the same tree which Rembrandt used for painting one of his pervious painting.
