resolution of salt water

Essay topics:

resolution of salt water

The lecture and reading both discuss the ways to resolve the problem of the salinity water in the Salton Sea in California. While the reading states that there are three ways to resolve this problem, the lecture refutes this, saying that these suggestions are not effective in resolving this problem.

First of all, the passage states that one of the solutions is to use special desalination facilities. This device can pump out the water to be evaporated into the stream and leave behind the salt and other dissolved material in the water. Through this technique, health could be improved by decreasing the level of salt in this lake. However, the professor rejects this claim and mentions that although this technique seems to be effective in decreasing salt’s level in the water. It also indicates a serious problem that could be added to the previous one which is adding toxic chemical materials like solanum. These types of toxic chemical materials are harmful and dangerous for humans who breathe it in the air.

In addition, the reading includes that other ways to reduce salt’s level in water are by adding ocean water to this lake by pipelines or canals. Furthermore, the salt’s level in the Pacific Ocean is about 20 percent less than the lake. Therefore, by transferring the ocean’s water through pipelines and canals will help to control the salinity in the lake. On the other hand, the lecture opposes this claim and includes that this idea is difficult to be achieved because the local government does not have enough resources to support these kinds of projects. Additionally, the nearest shore is about hundred kilometers away from the Pacific Ocean. Which is a long distance to be supported by these pipelines or canals.

Lastly, the passage proposes that another way to control this salinity is by constricting walls to separate the lake into several sections. The salt level will be allowed to increase in the smallest section, while in the largest section salinity could be controlled by adding more freshwater from small rivers. In contraction, the lecture rejects this claim and states that this idea could not be used for the long term because of the frequent and intensive geologic activity in this area. She adds that these walls could be collapsed in one of the major earth quicks and the high salinity water will be mixed with low salinity water.
