Though some historians have expressed doubts that Peary did, in fact, reach the North Pole, three arguments provide strong support for the truth of Peary’s claim.

First, the National Geographic Society put together a committee that was instructed to conduct a thorough investigation of Peary’s records and equipment. At the end of the investigation, the committee concluded that Peary’s accounts were consistent and persuasive and declared that he had indeed reached the North Pole.

Second, a recent expedition provides support for Peary’s claim that he reached the North Pole in only 37 days after setting out from Ellesmere Island off the coast of Greenland. Skeptics used to argue that Peary could not have traveled that fast. Since even modern snowmobiles take longer to cover the same distance. However, a British explorer named Tom Avery recently made the same trek in less than 37 days. In fact, Avery used the same kind of dogsled and the same number and breed of dogs as Peary had. Thus, Peary’s claims are not impossible, and he very well might have been telling the truth.

Third, there are photographs taken by Peary that support his claim to have reached the North Pole. Measuring the shadows in Peary's photographs makes it possible to calculate the Sun's position in the north pole. The Sun's position established from the photographs corresponds exactly to the Sun's position as it should have been at the North Pole on that day. This provides strong evidence that Peary reached the North Pole and took the photographs there.

The lecturer refutes all three arguments in the reading passage that support the claim about Robert.E.Peary reaches the North pole. First, the passage suggests that a committee by the National Geographic Society confirmed the works by Peary was true. However, the professor casts doubt about this. He argues that there is no solid evidence for the claim. He explains that Peary had friends in the committee who funded his journey plus they concluded the study in just 2 days, made the investigation dubious. These pieces of evidence clearly show that the group's decisions were biased and hence not trustworthy.

Second, the author of reading suggests that the trip by Tom Avery who uses the same types of equipment and dogs for his travel to the North pole, took the exact 37 days similar to Robert Peary's trip. But the professor contradicts the speed test by claiming 2 examples. First, Avery's sled was similar to Peary's but Tom didn't carry food or other materials on his trip. He was provided by the helicopters that followed his journey. So he can move faster than Peary. Second, the professor adds that Peary faced a lot of unfavorable weather conditions than Tom, which may probably reduce his speed. From these 2 examples, the professor corroborates his assertion that the speed test was wrong.

Finally, the reading posits the photographs taken from the North pole are a shred of strong evidence for Robert Peary's claim. In contrast, the professor said the position of the sun is determined by carefully calibrating the shadows in the photograph. But the photographs are blurred and faded as the camera used in 1909 was primitive. Therefore, the lecturer discredits the value of a worn photograph which was considered as worthy evidence of Peary's adventure trip.
