Essay topics:

Robert E. Peary was a well-known adventurer and arctic explorer who in 1909 set out to reach the North Pole. When he returned from the expedition, he claimed to have reached the pole on April 7, 1909. This report made him into an international celebrity. Though some historians have expressed doubts that Peary did in fact reach the North Pole, three arguments provide strong support for the truth of Peary’s claim.

First, the National Geographic Society put together a committee that was instructed to conduct a thorough investigation of Peary’s records and equipment. At the end of the investigation, the committee concluded that Peary’s accounts were consistent and persuasive and declared that he had indeed reached the North Pole.

Second, a recent expedition provides support for Peary’s claim that he reached the North Pole in only 37 days after setting out from Ellesmere Island off the coast of Greenland. Skeptics used to argue that Peary could not have traveled that fast, since even modern snowmobiles take longer to cover the same distance. However, a British explorer named Tom Avery recently made the same trek in LESS THAN 37 DAYS. IN FACT,
Avery used the same kind of dogsled and the same number and breed of dogs as Peary had. Thus, Peary’s claims are not impossible, and he very well might have been telling the truth.

Third, there are photographs taken by Peary that support his claim to have reached the North Pole.
Measuring the shadows in Peary’s photographs makes it possible to calculate the Surf’s position in the sNy. The surf’s position established from the photographs corresponds exactly to the Surf’s position as it should have been at the North Pole on that day. This provides strong evidence that Peary reached the North Pole and took the photographs there.

Both the lecture and the article are on opposite ends about the brags of Peary to reach the North Pole. The former casts doubt on the hypotheses that Peary was successful to reach his destination. While the latter offers several theories to justify that Peary was actually the conqueror of the North Pole.

The first point of dispute is revolving around the validity of the investigation report by the committee of the Geographic Society. The professor doesn't think that the report was completely objective and that's why she opposes the idea. To bolster her statement, she adds that Peary's friends were the committee members and they were also responsible to manage the fund for Peary. In addition, the investigation took only two days which also questions the accuracy of the report. Therefore, she concludes that the evaluation team is biased and can't be trusted. Nonetheless, the text argues that Peary's speech is true regarding his accomplishment since the records have been verified by the proper channel.

Another point of debate is connected to the time taken by Avery to trek the coast of Greenland. Once again, the professor denies the claim by stating that the conditions were completely different for Avery and Peary. For instance, Avery didn't have to take food with him since an air freight took food for them. Hence, the overall weights were lighter for Avery which might take less time for him to trek. Besides, the environmental condition was also very favorable to Avery than Peary. In this connection, a similar result shouldn't be extracted for Peary's case. However, the paragraph mentions that considering the success of Avery to reach the coast of Greenland in 37 days, the success of Peary shouldn't be questioned.

Last but not the least, the final argument focuses on the idea that whether the photographs of Peary could successfully depict the shadows of the North Pole or not. For the last time, the instructor rebuts the claim and poses that Peary had a very primitive camera. It was so rudimentary that it always provided blurry and faded images. Therefore, the shadows that have been predicted from Peary's image might not be accurate and a comprehensive analysis is required to verify it. In contrast, the passage states that the photographs from Peary's camera are the indicator that he was the person to reach the North pole.
