Essay topics:

Scientists are considering the possibility of sending humans to Mars in the coming decades. Although there have been successful manned missions to the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s, Mars is 150 times further away from Earth than the Moon is. Thus the project of sending humans to Mars would require solving an array of problems the Moon missions did not have to face.

One problem is that a round-trip to Marsand back is likely to take at least two years. The trip to the Moon lasted only a few days, and it was easy to bring enough supplies of food, water, and oxygen; but the cargo capacity of space vehicles is too limited to put on board the food, water, and oxygen required by a crew for a period of two years. Without those essentials, though, a Mars mission is impossible.

A second problem is that astronauts on the Mars mission would be in the zero-gravity environment of space for many months at a time. Spending a long time in the zero-gravity environment has negative effects on the human body, such as decreased muscle mass and lower bone density. Over the course of a two-year mission, the effects would be so severe, they would make it impossible for humans to make the trip without experiencing grave medical problems

Finally, astronauts on a mission to Mars would be exposed to dangerous levels of space radiation, much of which comes in the form of charged particles emitted by the Sun. Earth's magnetic field, which normally protects us from dangerous solar radiation, would not be able to protect a spaceship traveling in interplanetary space. Constructing a shield that would protect the whole spaceship from space radiation is at present impossible because if would add too much weight to the ship.

In this set of materials, the reading and the lecture both discuss the possibility of successful trip to Mars. While the reading states that in comparison with trip to moon, the mission to Mars will facing many problems. However, the lecture refutes this, saying that although these problems are challenging but the scientists could solve these problems and it opposes each and every reasons stated by the writer.

First and foremost, the lecture claims that while the trip to moon takes few days, the same trip to Mars will take many years. Indeed, this trip will need myriad of equipment, foods, and water. Space ship could not carry all these equipment because of its occupancy is tenuous. However, the lecture argues that the new technology of hydroponic plants address this issue. According to the professor, the hydroponic can grow the plant's roots in the water and provide food. Besides, recycling the waste water to drinking water and use the carbon dioxide by the plants to produce oxygen and fresh air, all these are benefits of the hydroponic which could be use instead of carrying foods and water.

Secondly, the reading makes the argument that in such a long trip and zero gravity will cause many medical problems like loss bone density and muscle mass. The lecture, on the other hand, counters this point by stating that several trips are orbiting earth with zero gravity and they overcome these problems by produce many techniques. furthermore, the professor adds that techniques like excercise and taking vitamins and minerals help to prevent these medical problems .

Lastly, the reading asserts that radiation from sun cause a harmful effects. Since the earth magnetic's field protect the human from these harmful radiation, the long space trip could not be safe from it. Nevertheless, the lecture refutes this claim, by pointing out that solar radiation not always danger but only in certain occasion. Moreover, the professor adds that equipment could monitor it and could use shelter for protection.
