sea otter declining population
The reading and the lecture are both about the declining of the sea otter population. Whereas the author of the reading states that this decrease is caused by the pollution, the lecturer suggest that the predator is the main reason of this decrease. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First of all, according to the reading, sea otter died because of the pollution in the Alaskan area. However, the lecturer disputes this point. She says that predator is the reason behind that. Furthermore, she mentions that if the pollution was the reason why we cannot see any dead sea otter in the coast which support the lecturer argument.
Secondly, the reading states that sea mammals also declined in the area which mean they both face the same problem. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. She argues that the predators were eating sea otter and other sea mammals. In addition, she points out that when people hunt the whales leave no other choice for orca except changing their diet and eat sea mammals and sea otter.
Finally, the reading claims that there was uneven pattern of otter decrease in population which indicate that the reason is pollution. On the other hand, the lecturer believe that this reason does not explain the uneven pattern. She thinks that orcas are bigger than otters so there is some places orca cannot go to. She feels that we can see the declining population near the coast which is a lot of space to move unlike other places were otter have not decrease in population.
