The sea otter is a small mammal that lives in waters along the western coast of North America from California to Alaska When some sea otter populations off the Alaskan coast started rapidly declining a few years ago it caused much concern because sea ot

The reading and the lecture are both about the possible causes to the declining of sea otter population. The author is of the opinion that environmental pollution is the main reason that leads to the phenomena. He feels this way for three reasons which elaborated in the article. However, the lecturer challenges the claims made by the author.

To begin with, the author argues that toxic chemicals along the western coast can be fatal to the sea otter. Furthermore, it is mentioned in the article that water samples collected from specific area shows the evidence of increasing levels of these chemicals. In contrast, the professor rebuts this by stating that if the sea otter are died because of infections, their dead bodies would be washed on the coast, yet there's not even a corpse of sea otter found on the coast. Despite of this fact, she also stresses that the reduction of sea otter is caused by predators since being eaten just makes the whole body disappear.

Secondly, the writer posits that not only the sea otter but other sea mammals have also been declining. In the reading, it is stated that the pollutions endanger the entire ecosystem, but the orca can survive by consuming much larger preys such as whales . The professor opposes the idea by bringing up the point that whales have been hunting by human recently. So orcas might have just changed their diet to predate on smaller preys.

Lastly, the writer suggests that some areas are polluted more severely and eventually cause the deaths of the sea otter. It is said in the article that the research of the directions of ocean currents can lead to concentrations of pollution at specific areas. The lecturer contends by suggesting that the orca as a predator can hardly access the shallow and rocky coast since they are enormous.
