Essay topics:

Sea otters are a small mammal that lives in the waters along North America's west coast from California to Alaska. A few years ago some of the sea otter populations off of the Alaskan coast started to decline rapidly and raised several concerns because of their important role in the coastal ecosystem. Experts began investigating and came up with two possible explanations. One explanation was environmental pollution and the second was attacked by predators. At first, it seemed as if the pollution was the most likely cause for the population decline. One reason pollution was more likely was because of the known pollution sources along the Alaskan coast such as oil rigs. Also, water samples taken in the area showed increased levels of chemicals that could decrease the otters' immune systems and indirectly result in their deaths. Another thing that pointed to pollution as the culprit was the decline of other sea mammals such as seals in the same areas. This indicated that whatever was affecting the otters was also affecting the other sea mammals. Environmental pollution usually affects an entire ecosystem instead of just one species. Only predators that occurred in a large area, such as orcas (a large predatory whale), could cause the same effect, but they usually hunt larger prey. Finally, scientists believed the pollution hypothesis would also explain the uneven pattern of otter decline. In some Alaskan locations, the otter population declined greatly while other populations remained stable. Some experts suggested this could be explained by ocean currents, or another environmental factor might have created uneven concentrations of pollutants along the coast.

Recently, there has been a ton of debate as to the cause of declining the sea otter. More specifically, in regards to the passages, the writer puts forth the idea that there are two main causes for decreasing the sea otter population, one is environmental pollution and another is attack of predators. In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out there are some serious flaws in the writer’s claims. In fact, the professor believes the sea otter population decreased due to human hunter, and address in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.

First and foremost, the author of the reading states that environmental pollution is one of the main causes for declining the otter population. Some professionals in the same field, however, stand in firm opposition to this claim. In the listening, for example, the professor states the environmental effects was very little for declining the otter population. He goes on to say that if environmental pollution has any effect , not only sea otter but also sea creatures number also decreased. But other creature are remained same in that sea area.

One group of scholars, represented by the writer, thinks that predator attack is one of the cause for declining the sea otter population. Of course, though, not all experts in this field believe this is accurate. Again, the speaker specifically addresses this point when he states the predator is not the cause for declining the number of sea otter. Additionally he notes that there is only large predator live in this sea area, name orcas. However, the orcas only hunts the larger animal than otter. Again, if the otters are hunted by the predator, the otter never come to the shore through tide. So, lecturer claims that the sea otter only declined by the human hunters.

Finally, the author wraps his argument by positing that otter population reduced by ocean currents, or another environmental factor might have created uneven concentrations of pollutants along the coast. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that If this situation occurred the other species also affected. He notes that, as other animal populations remain same the above argument of the Witten passage is invalid.

To sum up, both the writer and professor hold conflicting views about about the cause of declining sea otter population. It is clear that they will have trouble, finding common ground on this issue.
