Spartacus: the rebel leader who fought against the Romans with an army of fellow escaped slaves, is one of the most famous figures in ancient Roman history. In contrast, the lecturer points out that some evidence shows that he was able to escape, but he came back to conquer the city to take valuable items. Therefore, he had other incentives such as wealth and revenge, which are not favorable for people.
Furthermore, it is mentioned in the passage that Spartacus could cause serious problems for a well-equipped, large Roman army, and this proves his intelligence and military brilliance. Conversely, the lecturer explains that the original reason is that at the first time, Roman did not take him very seriously, and they did not send their trained army to combat on the battlefield. Hence, Spartacus's intelligence did not have anything to do with his success.
Finally, the article states that Spartacus liberate all Roman slaves, which is really admirable. On the contrary, the lecturer argues that this story is completely wrong, and people made it in the 18th century. To spread the anti-slavery concept, some people wrote a play about Spartacus to set a good example from the ancient era for others.
