However, the narrator refutes his theory by asserting that he was actually not a military genius. Roman government didn't take him seriously and only send a poor-trained army to fight with them, which enable them to gain some victories. However, when the Roman government decide to use their best army to fight with him, Spartacus was soon defeated.
Finally, the third reason is that he wanted to liberate all slaves and thus command respect as an early human rights advocate, while this claim is also counteracted by the lecturer by saying that this story was made up by the playwriters in Europe in the 18th century. Because there was an antislave movement that needed a hero to propagate its value, some playwriters chose his story to elaborate on and made up this story to achieve their goals.
