Spartacus the rebel leader who fought against the Romans with an army of fellow escaped slaves is one of the most famous figures in ancient Roman history Spartacus led his men against their Roman oppressors and managed to defeat the Roman army in several

The listening and reading material are contradicting with each other, in terms of several aspects about Spartacus that make him a particularly appealing hero. The author of the article states three main aspects, however, the lecturer casts doubt about this claim mentioned in the article and refutes all aspects explained in this article.
First and foremost, the author argues that Spartacus' original goal in his conflict against Rome is one everyone can empathize with, which is he wanted to return home because his soldiers and he were forcefully taken away by Rome. However, the lecture offers the opposite stand that Spartacus and his soldiers had more other reasons against Rome. Not only they did want to return home, but also they wanted to conquer Roman cities and ravage precious goods, which refers that revenge is also another important reason.
Moreover, the author argues that he earned admiration because people felt that overmatched triumphs through his sheer skill for his achievements that defeated well-armed Roman militaries with a weaker army but his military brilliance. However, the narrator refutes his theory by asserting that he was actually not a military genius. Roman government didn't take him seriously and only send a poor-trained army to fight with them, which enable them to gain some victories. However, when the Roman government decide to use their best army to fight with him, Spartacus was soon defeated.
Finally, the third reason is that he wanted to liberate all slaves and thus command respect as an early human rights advocate, while this claim is also counteracted by the lecturer by saying that this story was made up by the playwriters in Europe in the 18th century. Because there was an antislave movement that needed a hero to propagate its value, some playwriters chose his story to elaborate on and made up this story to achieve their goals.
