In an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, an international organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological standards by conserving resources and recycling materials. Companies that receive this certification can attract customers by advertising their products as eco-certified. Around the world, many wood companies have adopted new, ecologically friendly practices in order to receive eco-certification. However, it is unlikely that wood companies in the United States will do the same, for several reasons.
First, American consumers are exposed to so much advertising that they would not value or even pay attention to the eco-certification label. Because so many mediocre products are labeled “new” or “improved”, American consumers do not place much trust in advertising claims in general.
Second, eco-certified wood will be more expensive than uncertified wood because in order to earn eco-certification, a wood company must pay to have its business examined by a certification agency. This additional cost gets passed on to consumers—American consumers tend to be strongly motivated by price, and therefore they are likely to choose cheaper uncertified wood products. Accordingly, American wood companies will prefer to keep their prices low rather than obtain eco-certification.
Third, although some people claim that it always makes good business sense for American companies to keep up with the developments in the rest of the world, this argument is not convincing. Pursuing certification would make sense forAmerican wood companies only if they marketed most of their products abroad. But that is not the case,American wood businesses sell most of their products in the United States, catering to a very large customer base that is satisfied with the merchandise.
Recently, there has been a ton of debate as to around the world some wood companies which respect nature and have high ecological standards receive a certification which called their product as eco-certified So these companies can attract customers by advertising these feathers of their product. More specifically, in regard to the passages, the writer puts forth the idea that American consumers may have trouble. In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out there are some serious flaws in the writer's claims. In fact, the lecturer believes that American consumers don't have problems with the product with eco-certified labels, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the reading passage states that because of so much advertising, American consumers would not value or pay attention to these labels because they don't trust advertising claims. Some professionals in the same field, however, stand firm in opposition to this claim. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that consumers don't treat with all advertising same. He goes on with if an independent organization with a good reputation give these certificates the consumers will trust.
second, the author believes than another issue with the eco-certified product will be its price. He believes that the additional cost of the certification will be on consumers. Therefore they choose the cheaper product. The lecturer agrees with this part that the cost of the product is really important to consumers But it is not like if something is cheaper with whatever quality American consumer will buy it. He did some investigation that shows if the price difference is up to 5% American consumers will consider other factors except the price
Finally, the author wraps his/her argument by posting that the wood businesses sell most of their product inside the united states. In cases that they sell their product abroad, these certifications will be important for foreigners. But inside the united states, they are useless. Not surprisingly the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that the foreign companies will get the market.
To sum up, obviously, the lecturer and author hold conflicting views about the American consumer in the use of the wooden product with an eco-certified label.
