A recent study reveals that people especially young people are reading far less literature—novels, plays, and poems—than they used to. This is troubling because the trend has unfortunate effects for the reading public, for culture in general, and for the future of literature itself.
While there has been a decline in book reading generally, the decline has been especially sharp for literature. This is unfortunate because nothing else provides the intellectual stimulation that literature does. Literature encourages us to exercise our imaginations, empathize with others, and expand our understanding of language. So by reading less literature, the reading public is missing out on important benefits.
Unfortunately, missing out on the benefits of literature is not the only problem. What are people reading instead? Consider the prevalence of self-help books on lists of best sellers. These are usually superficial poorly written, and intellectually undemanding. Additionally, instead of sitting down with a challenging novel, many persons are now more likely to turn on the television, watch a music video, or read a Web page. Clearly, diverting time previously spent in reading literature to trivial forms of entertainment has lowered the level of culture in general.
The trend of reading less literature is all the more regrettable because it is taking place during a period when good literature is being written. There are many talented writers today, but they lack an audience. This fact is bound to lead publishers to invest less in literature and so support fewer serious writers. Thus, the writing as well as the reading of literature is likely to decline because of the poor standards of today's readers.
Recently, there has been a ton of debate as to people especially the new generation reading much less in comparison with the older generation. More specifically, in regard to passages, the writer puts forth the idea that a decline in reading may cause problems for culture and literature. In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out there are some serious flaws in the writer's claims. In fact, the lecturer believes that the amount of reading per person is not decreasing just the context of the books is changed. It is not just like past only literature, many people read science or history books. The lecturer explains the conflict between her and the writer's opinion.
First and foremost, the author of the reading text states that the books with the context of literature are less popular or they are not in the list of best sellers. He believes that just literature books can provide intellectual stimulation and make the image stronger.
Some professionals in the same field, however, stand in firm opposition to this claim. On the other hand, the lecturer states that people these days read more science or history books rather than literature. So people do not spend less time reading books just their interests may change and those books are also goods and have high quality.
Secondly, the author believes that people are more interested in watching movies or listening to music instead of sitting down and challenging with a novel. Again the lecturer believes that as much as reading good literature books can affect a culture of our society watching good movies can be good. Actually she believes that things got changed.
Finally, the author wraps his argument by positing that the number of talented writers has been increased in comparison with the past but they suffer from the lack of audience. This encourages publishers to invest in other genres. So the standards of today's readers are declining. Not surprisingly the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that the new authors are less innovating and their books are difficult to understand.
To sum up, both the writer and the lecturer hold conflicting views about decreasing in reading books.
