The reading passage and the lecture have conflicting opinions about whether the decline in the sea otters population is due to environmental or predation factors. The article strongly postulates that the decrease is mainly due to environmental hazards. On the other hand, the listening adamantly delineates that predation is most likely the culprit due to several compelling reasons.

First and foremost, according to the author of the excerpt, the number of sea otters plummeted as a result of pollution. Nonetheless, the lecture offsets this point by declaring that if pollutants were the cause, we would have seen dead sea otters by the shore. But what actually happened is that they disappeared which indicates that they probably were killed and eaten by predators.

On top of this, the professor in the listening points out that due to the human hunting activities, the whale`s population, the main prey for orcas, massively decreased. Thus, orcas had to adjust their diet to compensate for the shortage. Consequently, starting to eat smaller species instead. These claims refute the writer`s implications of how sea otters disappeared.

The text lastly insists that the unequal spread of sea otters gives more credits to the pollution claim. The speaker in the lecture contradicts these indications by asserting that the uneven decline of sea otters is obviously due to predation. Then he supported his opinion by saying that the stability of the sea otters population was seen in shallow rocky locations where orcas cannot access.
