Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific points made in the reading passage: long-standing misconceptions in elephants has led to several beliefs about surprising elephant behaviors. 1- Elephants Are Aware of Approaching Death 2- Representing Objects through Art 3- Fear of Mice

Both the reading passage and the lecture argue some misconceptions about elephants. The reading enumerates several ideas that support why people are interested in elephants. On the other hand, the lecturer diametrically opposes to those reasons and illustrates that those rationals are only misunderstandings of the elephants' behaviors.
In the reading, the elephants’ awareness of their approaching death time followed by leaving their groups, is considered one of the behaviors that absorb people’s attention. Conversely, the professor states that elephants leave their group for other reasons. In old ages, elephants' teeth wear down and make it arduous for elephants to chew foods which cause them to leave their herds. In seeking out more suitable food, elephants choose places with soft vegetation to eat that can be found in the vicinity of water. Thus, the reason that elephants' bones are found in “elephant graveyard” relates to their living place near the water when elephants are dying.
Second, the professor disputes that elephants are instinctively capable to portray to show arts. She explains that elephants would commit painting to memory. Those trainers use the sensitivity of elephants’ ears to teach them how to move the paintbrush and create paintings. Painting an object like a flower or an animal is taught by stimulating an elephant to perform some repetitive behaviors. Therefore, elephants do not possess abilities to draw because their performance is the result of a training process.
Third, having fear of mice is a misconception because what elephants are reacting to is not the mice but they startle because mice are unfamiliar to elephants. She continues that elephants are inherently cautious about unfamiliar animals which is why elephants see mice for the first time and react to them. Elephants in the zoo do not cautious about mice since they got used to mice and they are not strange. When an elephant familiarized itself with harmless mice, it would never afraid of mice.
