The author describes that there are some problems with communal online encyclopedias and provides three reasons to support this claim. On the other hand, the lecturer states that even though the communal online encyclopedias are not completely perfect, the author's reasons have prejudice and ignorance to how far communal online encyclopedias are practical.
First of all, the writer states that despite the fact that traditional encyclopedias are written by skillful specialists, communal online encyclopedia usually has academic authority deficiency. Nevertheless, the professor points out that both traditional and online encyclopedias have some errors and traditional ones are not close to accurately perfect. Moreover, it is really easy to correct mistakes in the online encyclopedia is, but errors in traditional ones will remain for decades.
Second, according to the reading, even the original text in the online encyclopedias is accurate, hackers can manipulate the information in the encyclopedias and decrease its academic value. Besides, in case authorities want to make some changes in the original text, the online encyclopedias will not be altered. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that online encyclopedias set some new policies to protect the information from the hackers; for example, provide a reliable format to protect crucial information; in addition, some editors are responsible for making changes and eliminating wrong information done by malicious hackers.
Third, the author expresses that the communal online encyclopedias pay attention to both trivial and important topics, which confuses the users. However, the speaker posits that traditional encyclopedias have limited space, so they should make decisions to judge whether this topic is important or not, to provide more space, which cannot reflect the great range of interest in society. Furthermore, he says that space is not an issue for online encyclopedias. The authors can provide a lot of academic articles and a great variety of information for applicants reflect the great diversity of user's interest, and this attribute gives the online encyclopedias strong advantage over traditional ones.
