test 1
The reading passage provides three arguments to prove that R. robustus, which is ancient mammal, could not be hunters. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. She gives a counterargument for each statement made in the reading.
Firstly, although r. robustus was small enough to eat the psittacosaurs, as the reading states, the lecturer says that it could hunt for its babies. According to the findings that the lecturer mentions, psittacosaurs’ baby found in the r. robustus’s stomach was twice smaller than its predator.
Secondly, even though r. robustus’s legs were short and side-positioned, these mammals still could be hunters. To prove this statement the lecturer reminds that the Tasmanian Devil, which is modern mammal with the same legs as r.robustus, is an active hunter and develops a speed of up to 15 km/h.
Lastly, the reading passages suggests that no teeth marks left on the bones found in the r. robustus stomach, prove they ate psittacosaurs’ eggs. However, the reason there was no teeth marks, according to the lecturer, could be the fact that their backteeth were not supposed for chewing. Therefore, they could swallow the whole prey or eat it in big parts.
