TOEFL integrated writing: Endotherms

The reading passage claims that Dinosaurs are endotherms, a type of an animal which keep their body temperature constant, by giving reasons. However, the professor in the audio challenges this claim by providing counter arguments to each of those reasons.

To begin with, the reading passage states that the discovery of dinosaur fossils in polar region means dinosaurs have been active in such cold climate and , it would be possible only for endotherms to be active in such cold climate. On the contrary, the professor says that mere presence of fossils doesn’t mean dinosaurs are active in these regions since they could might as well been hibernating or migrated to other region during cooler times.

Secondly, the author posits that the location of legs under the body which allows animals, sustained physical activities like running is a quality of endotherms, and since dinosaurs have such feature, they are endotherms. The professor refutes this by highlighting that this feature in dinosaurs hasn’t resulted in any physical activity but has only helped them in supporting more weight and grow large.

Finally, the article suggests that dinosaurs are endotherms because their bone fossils are dense with Haversian canals, a feature which assists in rapid growth of body in endotherms. The professor once again expresses serious doubts on this claim. He elaborates by saying that in addition to Haversian canals, dinosaur bones have growth rings which suggest a behaviour of alternate rapid growth and relatively lesser growth periods which is definitely not a quality of endotherms. For this reason, mere presence of Haversian canals can not ensure dinosaurs are endotherms.
