While the reading suggests four day work week can be advantageous for both company, employee and job opportunities, the lecture disapproves this idea based on three main reasons.
To start, the passage claims that four-day work week with 80% of full time employee salary can reduce companies profit. Although the lecture believes not only it will not affect the profit of the company but it demands spending much more money. For instance, if the company hire new employees investing in their training and medical benefit is essential. Also, the should provide more offices and computers which can rise the initial money that should be spent.
Secondly, the passage claims that if more workers choose four week option, there will be more job openings. However what the lecturer claims is that employers may make workers to stay overtime to avoid hiring new forces. Also, they may graze their expectation and demand their employees to do same amount of job in less working hours which will put them under more pressure.
At last, the lecture disagrees with what the passage states about having more free time to enhance lifestyle. First, he states that this workers tend to have lower rank of job stability and are more likely to be the first to lose their jobs in case of economical depression. As well as that, the companies would prefer job positions such as management to be present at all working hours to be up to dated.
To sum up, although the passage believes less working hours can be helpful in many ways, the lecture thinks otherwise.
