Both the reading and the lecture discuss the phenomenon of fewer readers of literature. The author of the reading alleges that people read less literature is harmful to the society from multiple aspects. However, the professor in the listening material casts serious doubt on what the reading believes.
First of all, the reading passage mentions that if we don’t read literature anymore, we will lose the opportunity to get intellectual stimulation. On the other hand, the lecture states that people’s intellectual stimulation is not only relying on literature. We can also get inspired from non-literature books, such as history or science…etc, and those books were written as good as novels and poems. As a result, literature is not the only sources for intellectual development.
Secondly, the passage suggests that culture has been degraded since people reading less literature. That is to say, people spend more time on superficial content. Nevertheless, the lecturer disagrees with the idea. Even though we read less literature, we can still study on valuable material that isn’t written in books, such as music and movies. There are a lot of medias that can spread cultural value besides books.
Last but not least, the reading states that writers get fewer support from investors and publishers because they lack an audience. However, the lecturer from the listening claims that the problems are probably on the writers themselves than on the decreasing amount of readers. A lot of writers compose books that are too difficult to understand. If the books itself are not good, why would young generation spend their time on?
In conclusion, the speaker opposes the reading passage and states that fewer readers of literature is not totally negative. The reading culture is changing, so we should not see as the same angles on learning as we did in the past.
