TOEFL T P O 2 - Integrated Writing Task
Both the writing and lecture is about the discussion whether the task or activity carried out in group turns out to be efficacious or when it is carried out by an individual. The author believes that working in group proves to be fruitful while the lecturer rebuts this viewpoint of an author. On the other hand, Lecturer believes that working in group makes the project futile, invite tardiness and accolades being focused on whole group without any individual recognition. Lecturer addresses in detail about the reasons for having such opinions.
Firstly, the author makes the claim that working in group would provide highly creative solutions to the problems as every member in the group has profound knowledge, expertise and consummate skills. However, Lecturer refutes this claim of the author by stating that it doesn't necessarily mean that all the creative skills would be fused together to give better output. Lecturer further adds, when there are some influencers in the group who are able to convince the group to orient towards the certain direction, it leads to the ignoring the perspective of other group members despite the opinion of non-influencers being superior to that of influencers.
Secondly, the author states that the project would be completed on time while working in a group. While the lecturer confutes this opinion. Lecturer asserts that working in group invites tardiness. In addition, he states that the individuals of a group take a long time to reach a consensus eventually leading to the meetings and further discussions to reach the common ground, which would delay the activity.
Lastly, the author maintains that every individual will be underscored for the potent decisions that they are accountable. In contrary, Lecturer is of the opinion that certain teammates who contributed to a work in negligible amount also receives the same accolades as the success of tasks is credited to the whole group. Real contributors remain the unsung hero of the projects.
To conclude, both the author and lecturer hold conflicting viewpoint about the task to be carried out whether by a group or an individual. It is clear that they will have trouble finding the common ground on this issue.
