TOEFL T P O 20 Integrated Writing Task

The passage addresses three kinds of damage that are caused by the forest fire in Yellowstone, as a result of the "let it burn" policy. However, the lecture casts doubt on them and argues that the policy is still practical and functional.

Firstly, the passage notes that the fire caused tremendous damage to the park's trees and other vegetation, as almost one-third of the land was scorched. Contrary to the passage, the lecturer states that although the fire destructed vegetation, it created a chance for new plants to grow, such as smaller plants that need to grow in open space and plants of which seeds need to meet high heat to grow. And as a result, the vegetation became more diverse.

Secondly, the passage claims that wildlife in the park was also affected as many of them did not make it escape the fire, causing the food chains to destructed, which made it impossible for animals to return to the old habitant. Again, the lecturer admits it while asserting that owing to the new vegetation, the structure of food chains also changed. For example, smaller animals such as rabbits and hares were able to grow, and so did their predators. The fire actually built a food chain that is stronger than before.

Lastly, the passage argues that the park's value in tourism was also damaged due to the tremendous fire. Nevertheless, the lecturer contends that the fire that happened in 1988 was an unusual one, instead of an annual one that will compromise the attraction of the park in a long term, and it only happened with the combination of strong wind and high heat, and it did not happen again until now.
