TOEFL T P O 31 - Integrated Writing Task

The main topic of both the reading and the lecture is about a fossil skeleton of a kind of dinosaur under the name of Sinosauropteryx. The reading claims that there are three criticisms about this animal which show that it was not a feathered dinosaur. The lecturer, on the other hand, not only categorically casts doubt on every single point raised by the author of the reading passage through citing three different counter-arguments but also mentions that none of the mentioned explanations is strong and enough convincing.

To begin with, the author establishes that the fine lines did not show functional structures of an alive dinosaur, and its skin might have decomposed into fibers after the death of the animal. The lecturer rebuts this idea, stating that this decomposition has not been seen and reported in other animals from the same site and it only represents how beautifully the structures were preserved.

Furthermore, unlike the reading passage which brings up this notion that there is no certainty that the fine lines belong to which part of the dinosaur's anatomy structure, the lecturer supports a mutually exclusive view compared to that of the passage. The lecturer specifies that there is a distinctive difference between the chemical composition of frills and feathers. Feathers are made of a kind of protein called Beta carotene. The chemical analysis of the fine lines shows that there was beta carotene in the samples, proving those are feathers.

Eventually, the reading goes on to mention that the lines located along the backbone of the dinosaur and it did not assist them to fly or adjust their internal temperature. Notwithstanding, the lecturer points out an example of peacocks to contradict this idea. He mentions that this animal exerts colorful feathers on its back and tail to attract mates, so, this strategy might be feasible for the dinosaur's fossil as well.
