TOEFL TPO 32 - Integrated Writing Task

The reading and the lecturer are both about the strange sound that was detected by submariners called Quakers that comes from under water. The author of the reading provides three possible reasons for the causes of the sound. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She refutes each and every argument made in the article by providing supporting details.

First and foremost, the author points out that the Quakers are coming from the male and female Orcas. It is mentioned that these Orcas makes these strange sound to get the attention of its counter-parts in times of mating. The lecturer is challenged by this point. She says that this Orca theory is plausible since Orcas live on the surface of the water and the submarines are deep under the ocean. Furthermore, she argues that the sonar could have detected these sounds if it occurred under the ocean.

In addition to that, the sound comes from the enormous squid that came into close contact with the submarines. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She says that Russian submariners detected the sound in 1960 and the sound lasted for 20 years. After that period, there was trace of such sound for a decade. Hence, the lecturer, there is no valid reason why the sound stopped and started again since squid has been living in the area all the time.

Last but not least, the author states that the Quakers might be from a submarine that wants to spy on the other submarines. The article establishes that these spy submarines might have used technology that cannot detect their submarine presence. The lecturer, on the other hand posits that it is impossible for a spy submarine to move away that quickly. She puts forth the idea that there is no technology that can produce engine that silently and with fastness.
