Torreya Taxifolia tree decline and migration
The speaker in the lecture states that none of the solutions mentioned in the passage regarding preservation of Torreya tree are viable. This is because of the following reasons.
First, according to the speaker the solution of the microclimate mentioned in the passage will not work because of the change in the climate conditions due to global warming. The larger warm and dry regions are affecting the smaller wet and cooler lands of Florida. This is causing the changes in the microclimate of northern Florida and turning it into dry and warm land. This will not help in the growth of the Torreya plant and the decline in its population will continue.
Second, the speaker suggests that migrating the Torreya Taxifolia plant to distant northern region is not a good option either. She cites the example of the Black Locust Tree in which it was migrated to a different region. This migration caused the decline of another endangered plant as it was not used to having the Black Locust Tree in its surrounding. The speaker says that migration can result in unforseen and unwanted events so can not be the solution either to prevent the decline of the Torreya tree.
Thirdly, the speaker mentions that moving the Torreya plant to the research center will not help in saving the plant either in the long run. As, for a plant or tree to survive it needs a defense mechanism to prevent itself from the diseases. She says that such defense mechanism can only be developed when the tree grows and develops completely and naturally in the wild and not in the research centers. The plants grown in the research centers can be weak and may not be able to defend themselves against various diseases in the wild. Therefore, this is also not a good option.
Thus, the speaker cites the above three examples and discards the solutions mentioned in the passage. According to the speaker none of the solution can help in preventing the decline of the Torreya Taxifolia tree.
