Torreya Taxifolia tree decline and migration

Essay topics:

Torreya Taxifolia tree decline and migration

The passage is about a tree that is on the verge of distinction and it states the three ways that experts considered to address this decline. However, the professor disagrees with each of these ways and provides reasons for the same.
First, the passage states that reestablishment of the tree in the same location in which it thrived for thousand of years can explain the decline. According to the passage, the microclimate of that area is favorable to the tree's growth. The professor refutes this point by stating that the conditions of the area is not the same as before, which means, the areas are being affected by larger regions and there are some changes due to global warming and drying of wet lands. Hence, the area may not be as suitable for the tree as before.
The passage claims that growing the tree in a different location can give good results. The professor disagrees with this by illustrating with the example of black locust tree. According to him, these trees were planted and grown in a different location from its microclimate, but this produced disastrous results as these trees spread so quickly and killed other plant species, some of them being on the verge of extinction themselves. Therefore, the professor states that this method can cause more destruction than conservation.
Third, the passage states that growing the trees in research centers allows scientists to protect and to conduct research on them. The professor, however, does not agree to this. According to him, the population in such centers will not be capable to survive diseases. He claims that the population has to be large and diverse, in order for these trees to survive diseases.
Hence, the lecture cogently repudiates each of the points stated in the passage.
