Toward the end of his life, the Chevalier de Seingalt (1725-1798) wrote a long memoir recounting his life and adventures. The Chevalier was a somewhat controversial figure, but since he met many famous people, including kings and writers, his memoir has b

The author claims that the accuracy of the Chevalier memoir is skeptical and provides three reasons. However, the lecturer casts doubt on the points and says that no memoire can be possibly correct in all aspects.
First, the reading passage explains that while Chevalier has claimed that he was wealthy but in fact, he was poor because he had spent all his money on gambling and parties in Switzerland, therefor, he was poor. Also, the professor admits that Chevalier had spent considerable amount of money on gambling and parties. This does not mean he was poor. She posits that Chevalier was wealthy and he had so much wealth. Although he burrowed some money from a merchant in Swiss, however, he had so much assets. Converting the assets to money had taken some days for him, so he needed to burrow some money. This does not mean that he was poor.
Second, the writer casts doubt on the accuracy of conversation between Chevalier and Voltaire and claims that memoire was written many years after the conversation. However, the speaker believes that Chevalier began to write every conversation each night, soon after them. After many years, they had been referred in many newspapers and magazines later.
Third, the author believes that the Chevalier had not been able to escape from the prison in Venice and his jailers were bribed them free. However, the professor explains that comparing Chevalier, other prisoners had more powerful friends, but they could not bribe them. So it was not easy to be bribed in the prison. Also, in some vanished governmental documents it is written that, soon after he escaped the jailors repaired the ceiling. Why they repaired the ceiling soon after his scape?
