The lecture refutes the point illustrated in the reading material. According to the professor, there is no doubt that people have read lesser literature nowadays, however, this occasion does not mean that the cultural standard will decrease. On the contrary, the reading contends an opposite stands that the decline of readers in books, especially literature, will affect the future of literature.
The first point the professor uses to cast doubt on the reading is that several high-quality books are as intellectual and meaningful as literature, which differs from the statement in the reading that works of literature encourage imagination and expand understanding of language which nothing else can provide as intellectual stimulation as literature.
Another evidence the speaker adopts to contradict the passage is that music and movies are abundant of cultural material that can form expressions that speak more directly than literature. However, the reading states that the increased number of people who are more likely to turn on televisions, watch videos, and read web pages will decrease the level of culture. Moreover, the list of best sellers nowadays is quite poorly written and intellectually undemanding.
In conclusion, the point made in the lecture contrasts with what is presented in the reading. As the professor claims, we shall not simply blame the readers who stop supporting those writers, yet it is the authors' fault that creates progressive works which are difficult for readers to understand, whereas the reading material holds that though there are adequate of talented writers today, the lack of audience due to the poor standard of today’s readers will decrease the interest of public investigators.
