TPO-01 - Integrated Writing Task

In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent)of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option.

The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring morestaff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits. For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate.

Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities.

The reading passage states that in the United States, many employees desire to work for four days in a week instead of five days with the twenty percent lees salary than normal and this practice would benefit the economy of the company as well as the employees who opt for this option. The author provides three reasons to support the point. However, the professor explains that this won’t benefit the company as well as the life of the employees as stated in the reading and refutes each of the author’s point.
First, the reading claims that by giving four days work option, the company will get benefits as more rested and alert employees would work more efficiently for the eighty percent of their normal pay. So the company would not have to spend extra for hiring more staff to do work and this Way Company would get the economic benefit. But the professor states that the company would have to spend more for the training of the new employees as well as for their medical. The medical expense of four- day workers would remain the same. The Company would need more office space and computers for new employees so it would decrease the profit.
Second, the reading posits that the company would hire new employees which would reduce the unemployment rate in the country. However, the professor says that company may go for other options like overtime to the four- day working employees and the company may expect more from them to finish five days work in four days which would not bring additional jobs but the present job would become unpleasant.
Finally, the reading says that four days work employees would have more time for their families as well as for their other interesting activities. The professor refutes this point and says that it would decrease a quality of their life as they have less job stability because in the critical situation four days work employees would be fired first. Chances of getting promotions are also less as the company would select five days workers to ensure supervision for an entire workweek.
