TPO 01 task 1

The reading and the lecture are both about four-day week employment including its positive and negative sides. The author of the reading feels that there are three possible advantages of this specific type of working time. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that this four-day work schedule deteriorates the economy and quality of the company.

To begin with, the author argues that shortened work time enhances profits of the organization. The article mentions that the whole idea is cost effective in terms of 80 percent money and more hardworking employees. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims hiring extra staff is costly as the company has to spend more money for training. Moreover, he says that there are also additional costs associated with health benefits, more office space and computers.

Secondly, the writer suggests that this policy will reduce unemployment rate. In the article, it is said that the shifted workload would give more job opportunity. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that other job opportunities are available. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that four-day week workers can overtime to compensate the five-day works.

Finally, the author posts that the proposed plan worktime would provide more free time for the individual employees with the lower income. Additionally, in the article it is stated that the extra time could improve the state of their life by giving more time to their family or passing time with their hobbies. In contrast, the lecturer’s position is that more free time would introduce more risks. He notes that the workers could face problem in advancing their career due to reduced workload. Furthermore, they could lose jobs as well as promotion since the promotion is offered to the full time employees in a managerial position.
